10 Ways Friend Get-Togethers Have Changed

My husband and I have a great group of friends surrounding us.  We all go back a whopping 10 years to our college days and are even better friends now than back then.  There is consistently 3-4 couples that we get together with every month or so.  We are spread throughout MI and OH, so it is not as easy as when they lived just down the dorm hall from us.   And NOW, add in babies to the equation.  2010 and 2011 was the year of the baby.  We all magically decided that was the time to bring each of our first child into this world.  And, we all were blessed with wonderful boys.  Yep, round 1 of babies went to the boys.  A few of our friends are now on round 2 of babies and we are hoping that it will be a girl year (smile).

Before babies, our get-togethers usually centered around drinks and games (usually in that order).  We would stay up until 3-4am and would sleep in the next day until 10ish and gather around for a good breakfast meal.  WELL…things have changed….remember that round of baby boys?  Yes, our get-togethers are slightly different now…

10 ways friends get-togethers have changed

  1. Virgin drinks please.  Usually at our “parties” at least one of us is pregnant or nursing, so those jack and cokes are turned into Shirley Temples.
  2. We can’t stay awake.  That 3am bedtime of yester-year is more like midnight now with a few dropping out before that.
  3. Shhhh.  No more loud blaring music for us…heaven forbid we wake a child.
  4. Early mornings.  Guaranteed that at least one of us will be up by 8:00am.
  5. Nap times.  These are precious things that should not be messed with.  So as far as the group going out during the day, it is pretty much limited to the afternoon after all naps have been napped.
  6. Baby Talk.  We have lives, obviously, and enjoy talking about other things, but the babies and how cute they are usually is discussed more than once.
  7. Dinner in.  Dinners at restaurants have become a thing of the past.  Each couple is so engrossed in keeping their child happy that the adults rarely have a conversation at a restaurant.  Much easier at home…get take out delivered + let kids play on the floor = adult conversations.
  8. Car load of goodies.  Going to a friend’s house, even just for the day, involves many bags that are loaded in and out of cars.  A weekend trip of luggage looks like we are headed to FL for the week.  Heck I even wrote a whole series on traveling with a baby!
  9. Sharing of toys and germs.  There is no way to keep babies out of other babies’ toys, so we embrace it and the possible sickness that may result.
  10. Outings for the kids.  Trips to the zoo, kids museum, park, play space, etc. are on the agenda now, that is unless we can all swing a babysitter!  Check out our last trip with friends here.

I love, love, LOVE, getting together with our friends now, with babies!  It adds so much fun to our lives and sharing it with each other makes it that more special!

  • Our outings are starting to swing back the other way again– Our kids are now all over the age of 10. Our two youngest are old enough to stay home alone for a couple of hours while we… go out to dinner… hit a movie… wander around a bookstore… But we still have plenty of get togethers at our house or with friends where the kids have activities to keep them busy (lately it’s water fights in the back yard) while the adults get to be adults. No matter what season you’re in, just make the most of it! Great list! :)

  • Yep, this is pretty much the story of our lives! You should write one about how date nights have changed too. I wonder what our babysitter thinks of us when we return home at 8:30, exhausted. hahaha.
