Best Buys for Bedtime

Bedtime is one of the great mysteries of childhood.  Sleep schedules? Sleep training?  Huh??  We have been fortunate (knock on wood) to have a little one who is such a good sleeper.  The first 9.5 months have been smooth sailing, so we will see what happens from here, but so far so good!

In the quest for a do-able bedtime routine, my husband and I found the following products to be well worth it.  Money is no object when it comes to a wake free night in my book!

Best Buys for Baby’s bedtime

  • SleepSack.  Swaddle part #2.  After the swaddle was done with (around 5 months or so) we switched to a sleep sack.  That way baby boy would stay toasty warm at night without needing blankets (which pose a suffocation risk at his age).

  • Mobile.  You know, at first I was hesitant to use it for fear of baby boy becoming too reliant on it, but it ended up being just fine.  We didn’t use it every night, but sometimes when he wasn’t feeling up to going to bed, it was a nice distraction.  Shall we say…we used it to trick him into going into his crib.

  • Sound Machine.  This also seemed to work well to give him that “in the womb” feel.  We still use it now, however I have been thinking of slowly phasing it out.  It masks a lot of house noises so he can sleep, and it has also become a nap cue, in that he knows that it is nap time when he hears that sound.  There is an app also for white noise when you are on the go: Relax and Sleep.

  • Video Monitor.  #1 shower gift EVER!  It is expensive but a group of friends went in on it together.  I love, love, love, this thing.  I know there is a school of thought that goes against using a video monitor, but I really like it.  It has saved us from going into his room to check on him many times.  In those early months when you just have to check to see if they’re breathing, you don’t even have to get out of bed to do it!  Awesome yo.  I never have to guess if he is being really quiet or already sleeping.  Get it!

What products have you used that made bedtime smooth sailing?
