Cloth Diapers VS. Disposable Diapers

Cloth diapers vs. disposable diapers

Dum-da-dum!  You are witnessing history!  Well….maybe it’s not THAT monumental.  Anyways, you are about to read The First Installment of Versus! Excitement!  That was a lot of exclamation points in just a few sentences.  Ok, let’s cut to the chase.

In the VS. series, I will look at two different ways of doing something “baby style” and hash it out.  In this post, we will look at:

Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

Cloth diapers are making a comeback in the baby world, and are not the rectangle pieces of cloth of yester-year that many of our tushies were wrapped in.  There are all KINDS of varieties now sure to please any momma.

Pros and Cons

Disposable Diapers

Pros

  • Easy when on the go
  • Lots of brands to choose from
  • Hands “off” the smelly stuff
  • Light weight on the tush

Cons

  • Trash amount per day rises
  • Pricey!
  • Human waste ends up in the landfill
  • Last minute trips to the store when you run out

Cloth Diapers

Pros

  • Friendly on the landfills
  • Less diaper rashes
  • Saves $ when all is said and done
  • Never have to remember to buy diapers
  • Can be used for a 2nd child

Cons

  • They need to be washed regularly
  • Water bill will go up
  • More time consuming
  • Bulky-er on baby’s tush

My Take on Cloth Diapers vs. Disposable Diapers

My husband and I put a lot of thought into which diaper to choose for our son.  We ended up going the cloth diaper route and we are very happy we did!  There is a higher one time expense to buy the diapers, but that’s it!  No weekly costs on buying boxes of diapers.  After taking into consideration the water bill, laundry detergent cost, etc. we are saving lots of money with cloth, especially because we can use them a 2nd time with our next child.  Of course they do take a bit more time: washing every day/every other day, spraying the “poo” into the toilet, etc. but once you get used to it…no big deal!  To help you on your quest with cloth diapers check out my tips for using cloth diapers, and the 5 must have’s for using cloth diapers.

And years later, seriously, my youngest is 21, I still have cloth diapers around for dusting and any wiping where you don’t want to use a lint-leaving rag..

And years later, seriously, my youngest is 21, some of the cloth ones are still around to use anytime you need a rag that doesn’t leave lint, like when somebody gets a HUGE cut and needs stitches…(perfect rag for pressure on way to ER)

We started using cloth with our second when she was 18 months. Our 3rd has used almost nothing but cloth, we started using overnight disposables because she is a heavy wetter and likes to sleep on her stomach which has made for leaks. And now we are expecting #4 and we totally plan on using the cloth. I have tried many different brands and styles and have quite the stash. Im VERY happy with the decisions to go cloth. There are def. days where i miss the ease of disposable, but cloth always wins. :)

Hi Jenny! Joe’s sister right? Congrats on #4. Our son also used disposable at night for the very same reason. We are happy with our choice of cloth!

Yup, Joe’s sister! I love finding out when people use cloth for their kids. It gives me hope that more and more people will do it. And thank you on #4, its a boy! :)

  • I am UNhappy with my choice of disposables…but I’ve been using them non-stop for the last 8 years (putting 4 girls through). When I think about all the trash we’ve made and money we’ve spent, I cringe. If I could go back I would do cloth, but we’ve come to the point where it doesn’t make sense to make a switch. The end of the dark diaper tunnel is nearing (hopefully).

You know, when we started thinking of cloth diapers we first wanted to do it because of the environmental aspect. We recycle so much and only produce about one bag of trash per week or every other week. We did disposables for probably the first 8 weeks of his life, and our trash probably doubled! At least you are almost done with your diapering duties!
